Costco - Application Engineer

Description of position: This position is responsible for contributing to the success and support of the design and implementation of applications for one or more of the application development systems. This would include building a strong relationship between the Enterprise Architecture team, the Application Development Architecture Engineering team and the development team(s), which includes Business Analysts and functional management.


The Application Engineer is responsible for communicating the current application development technical strategy and standards, tools and methods to the application development teams. In partnership with functional area management, the Application Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the application development teams are designing systems consistent with current department design standards, are using the toolset currently supported by the department, and are following the current department development standards.

The Application Engineer is also responsible for working with functional area management and business analysts to create a vision and strategy for their application systems. The vision and strategy should be in support of business goals and provide a framework for determining appropriate solutions to business problems and needs. The business area’s vision and strategy should align and integrate with the other functional area team’s vision and strategy.

You will be responsible for your continued growth in the areas of technology, business knowledge and Costco policies.

Focus Areas
· Complex system design experience (multiple platforms and languages)
· Business strategy and roadmap planning experience " contributing to the vision for supported systems
· Formal software development methodology experience

Daily tasks and responsibilities
· Recommend improvements to cross system connectivity applications
· The Application Engineerwill be an active participant in the setting of App Dev technology standards
· The Application Engineer must adhere to the current project methodology (RUP)
· Contribute to defining processes for ensuring the use of standards and shells within the Application Development areas
· Assist with defining the short term and long term business strategy for the Development Area
· Maintain expertise in the applications specific to the Development Area
· Partnering with functional area mgmt, ensure adherence to design standards and that final code corresponds to design
· Participate in the requirements review, architecture determination, and solution design processes
· Change management (Turnover) Approval
· On project work the Application Engineer will typically fill a System Architect or Software Architect role

Qualifications (Costco-specific or industry-specific skills that candidates should possess)
· Proven and successful implementations of analyzing, designing, coding, and testing applications
· Advanced RPGIV, RPGILE, SQL, CLP and CMD programming skills
· Thorough knowledge of database design including relational database design and iSeries native and SQL database design
· Prior experience implementing N-tiered solutions specifically using IBM MQ series / broker
· Broad knowledge of iSeries tools & utilities such as Turnover, Testbench, X-Analysis and the WebSphere family of products
· Experience implementing successful large scale projects
· Successful experience developing complex software following formal software development methodologies, preferably RUP
· Experience and willingness to teach/mentor others in I.S.
· Must have the ability to learn and maintain knowledge of multiple application areas
· Experience implementing solutions on multiple hardware platforms and operating systems
· Must be self-motivated, responsible, conscientious, and detail oriented.
· Must have excellent trouble shooting skills.
· Must have proven ability to follow priorities and timelines
· Must have strong analytical and problem solving skills
· Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Proven ability to work independently or in conjunction with a team
· Proven ability to build consensus between teams with differing architecture and design viewpoints and perspectives
· Experience with Lawson version 9.x on the iSeries platform would be a plus
